About Us
(A note from JP Labrosse, Creative Director)
Hi! I’m JP. The Mindful Movement Initiative is a philanthropic project I contribute my time to, in collaboration with the generous group of people listed in the “Team” section below.
Our Mission
Here at the Mindful Movement Initiative, our philanthropic mission is to develop, validate and scale programs that connect people at the intersection of mindful movement, music, creativity and community - resulting in improved mental, physical and social health.
What is mindful movement?
There are many kinds of mindful movement. The type of mindful movement we focus on is the practice of moment-by-moment non-judgmental attention to what is happening in the body and mind as we move and interact with our environment, music and sometimes a community of people. We focus on mindful movement that involves both structure and creativity and we have found this practice to offer exceptional benefits to mental and physical wellbeing.
For a small taste of what the practices we offer are like, check out our 5-minute mindful movement experience on NPR.
Where does this practice come from?
There are many different practices that incorporate elements of mindful movement. This includes ones listed on the Inspirations page - with whom I have spent collectively 1000s of hours practicing and training over the past two decades. There are many other mindful movement practices beyond this too, and we recommend continuing to explore and experiment to find the right practices for you. Humans have been doing practices like what we do for perhaps 40,000 years - as a way to connect to themselves and each other.
What does The Mindful Movement Initiative do?
Our work centers around:
The distillation of specific, highly effective mindful movement practices into bite-sized modules that are easy to learn.
Quantifying the benefits and deeply understanding the mechanisms in which they are delivered - via partnership with top university labs.
Making these practices accessible to the broadest possible audience with the goal of greater well-being and large-scale positive impact.
About JP
My ultra-super-duper passion for the past 30 years has been bringing communities together through movement, music and creativity. As part of that passion, I am a mindful movement coach and a DJ and have been leading regular classes in Los Angeles for the past 15 years.
In addition to that, (with the vast majority of my time) I am also a technology business leader who has focused on developing products that support people in moving more and having fun doing it. My main work today (which is not affiliated with my philanthropic efforts with the Mindful Movement Initiative) is as Head of Product Strategy and Innovation for Supernatural where I have worked since 2020.
Supernatural is a science-backed VR fitness experience that lets you travel to beautiful destinations around the world, and box and flow to the beat of 1000s of hit songs with a coach by your side. It gives people instant access to joyful movement and is created by an incredible team of passionate people focused on unlocking more joy, awe, wonder and well-being in the world.
Much earlier on in my career, I was at Apple building some of the first iPods - (think silhouettes with white earbuds euphorically moving to music on bright backgrounds) - and later on built a startup called Stir that made smart standing desks with haptic biomimicry - focused on making movement throughout the day feel effortless.
You can find more about my other companies and projects on linkedin and check out this post about the Supernatural Boxing launch that unpacks my 40-year-long passion for music, movement and mindful presence.
